Although, you probably won’t find me reading a book on my own, you will catch me reading to my littles daily. Soon, once they get of age, they will want to show off their reading skills and take over. How did I get here?
I started small and simple, locating quick books to read to them at night. My favorites were the 5-minute bedtime stories. When I came home from that long work commute, I felt like I could spare 5 whole minutes to read a bedtime story. There were plenty of nights I fell asleep with the kids after that 5-minute story though. Once Aspen began learning site words, her request to read kept coming. I’ll never forget the night she picked out a book for me to read and said, “Mommy, can I try?” I was so surprised.
During her Pre-k orientation, the teacher told all the parents that most kids will read when they graduate, and some won’t. Don’t pressure them and they will get there. I kept those words in my head and let her do her thing.
As a result, this girl was reading. I was so impressed and proud. The next morning, I couldn’t wait to tell her Pre-K teacher that Aspen read the book last night. Her response was “yeah, you just noticed Mom!” And it took off from there. This has only grabbed Chandler’s attention and excitement about books. Just last week he grabbed his favorite book out of his room and asked if he can read to me like Aspen. Look at God! Working it all the way out.
On a typical Saturday morning, while at a local bookstore after Story Time, Aspen and I decided to look for more Chapter Books. Mommy was specifically looking for one with African American characters. Surprisingly, Aspen was drawn to the non African American character books. My mind began to wonder why she wasn’t interested in any of the “Brown Girl” books. Her response was “They’re not as funny.” If you could’ve seen the surprised look on my face. My next question was, then what will we do? Her response: “Mom, I want to write my own book. Seriously, Mom!”
Soon afterwards, our book writing journey began. Not only was Aspen on a mission to write her first book, but later, Chandler asked if he can write a book too. “A Monster Truck Book, Mommy” were Chandler’s words.
Now Ms. Aspen and Mr. Chandler are Authors. Like holy hell, a whole author at 3 and 6 years old!! Let me get my life all the way together. This family of communicators and now authors, are so excited to share their debut books, Sibling Love and Oh, Monster Truck, Come Sleep with Me are available now on their website, in addition to Amazon, Walmart, and all major retailers.
Did I mention, I’ll be happy to assist with publishing your book? That’s right, schedule a discovery call with me, and we will make your dream a reality.
This mommy joy just keeps on.
